With its Open Enrollment starting November 1, Covered California has created a checklist to help simplify the process of choosing the right health care plan. Whether you are enrolling for the first time, renewing a plan, navigating a major life change, or seeking more affordable coverage, Covered California lets you compare options and see whether you qualify for financial assistance.
Covered California, the state’s Obamacare exchange, is designed for people who do not receive health insurance through an employer, including gig workers, freelancers, entrepreneurs, self-employed individuals, and people aging off a parent’s plan at age 26. It connects individuals and families to health plans and financial assistance, helps you understand your options, and provides access to quality care.
“Covered California offers free assistance online, by phone and in your community with more than 14,000 certified enrollers across the state that offer clear guidance to help you feel comfortable making a decision that fits your family’s needs,” stated Dr. Monica Soni, Covered California Chief Medical Officer. “Gathering the information that you need can help streamline the enrollment process.”
Enrollment checklist
Health care needs and budget: Consider preferred doctors, prescriptions, expected medical needs, monthly premiums, deductibles, and other out-of-the-pocket costs. The plan with the lowest premium may not be the least expensive overall. Be ready to make your first payment.
Personal and contact information: Collect full legal name, date of birth, Social Security number, when applicable, and contact details for each applicant. If applicable, also have immigration documents such as a Green Card, I-94, or EAD available.
Household information: Be prepared to provide your household size, marital status, dependents, and the family members seeking coverage.
Income information: Gather recent pay stubs, tax records, or other documents that can help estimate your household’s annual income. Include applicable income from self-employment, gig work, benefits, tips, and other sources.
Current health insurance information: If you have coverage, keep your policy details handy. If you are renewing, review your current plan to confirm that it still meets your needs.
When comparing plans, consider more than the monthly premiums. Check the provider network, prescription drug coverage, deductible, copayments, and out-of-pocket costs to identify the right plan for your circumstances.
“A little planning can help individuals and families find coverage that matches their health needs, budget, and stage of life,” continued Dr. Soni.
