SAN FRANCISCO — Today, trailblazing former U.S. Senator Barbara Boxer endorsed Supervisor Connie Chan for Congress. Boxer started her career on the Marin County Board of Supervisors, including as its first woman President, before representing San Francisco for over 30 years in the U.S. House and Senate. Her endorsement adds to the growing momentum behind Chan’s campaign with 70 days left before Election Day.
“I am pleased to endorse San Francisco Supervisor Connie Chan for Congress,” said Senator Boxer. “If ever we needed a fighter and coalition builder who puts working families first, it is now. Connie is that fighter, and the path that she is on reminds me of my own. I went directly from being a Marin County Supervisor focused on the county budget to sharing representation of San Francisco for decades in Congress. Just as it will be for Connie, I used my valuable experience to tackle the federal budget, which became my central focus because it sets the priorities of our nation.
Senator Boxer continued: “As Budget Chair, Connie not only balances the City’s budget, but protects investments in San Francisco families — including affordable housing, immigrant services, small businesses and education. I personally believe that local government, which is as close to the people as you can get, is fantastic experience for Washington. It keeps you centered on the individuals you serve rather than the larger bureaucracy and political games.
Senator Boxer concluded: “When I was elected to the House of Representatives, there were only 23 women — and I vowed to work to get us to 50 percent of that body. Although we have made great progress, with 125 women now serving among 435 representatives, there is still a lot of work to do. Connie will ensure that gap doesn’t grow. She will make us proud.”
