San Bernardino County Museum invites residents to participate in guided Mahjong sessions on May 26, held in conjunction with the Chinese Pioneers exhibition. Two sessions will be offered in the Fisk Gallery from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m.

These two-hour, instructor-led experiences introduce participants to the modern American style of Mahjong while exploring the game’s cultural origins and historical significance. Designed for beginners, the sessions provide a structured and accessible way to learn the fundamentals of gameplay.

Before Mahjong became widely popular in the United States during the early 20th century, it traveled across the Pacific with Chinese immigrants who established communities throughout the American West, including in the greater San Bernardino County region. The game served as a meaningful way to maintain cultural traditions and foster social connection in a new environment.

Instructor Brenna Gibbs will lead both sessions, guiding participants through the history and symbolism of the tiles, the structure of gameplay and basic strategies for building a winning hand. All materials will be provided, including a temporary Mahjong card for use during the class.

Presented in connection with the Chinese Pioneers exhibition, on view at the County Museum through July 26, the program offers visitors an opportunity to engage more deeply with the stories and histories represented in the galleries through hands-on participation.

The cost to attend is $60 per person and includes museum admission, instruction and materials. Space is limited to ensure a personalized experience, and advance registration is required.
