Awards will be presented in several categories; The Bert R. Van Horn Award is provided to Riverside County Probation employees for providing superior service and care to youth housed at county juvenile detention facilities.
The Starfish Award will recognize a dedicated Riverside County Office of Education teacher who worked tirelessly through the pandemic to provide educational services in juvenile detention facilities, ensuring some sense of connection and normalcy for those in her charge.
In addition, the JJDPC will celebrate the Foster Parents of the Year and community-based organizations working to serve at-risk populations.
The Commission will also award Riverside County Sheriff’s Deputy Cody Ballard the Service Above Self Award. Ballard responded to a radio call of a mother and her infant who planned to spend the night on a bus bench, having missed the last bus to their destination. Ballard used his own funds to secure a hotel room for the evening for the mother and infant to ensure their safety.
