If you recall our story we published on June 21st, we reported the story given to us from Chantel Bonet, the sister of Patricia Wright, who had been serving a life sentence without possibility of parole at the California Institution of Woman in Corona, California. Patricia was diagnosed with terminal liver cancer and kidney failure and was given six months to live. Chantel had been fighting for years to have her sister released, primarily for the uncertain circumstances of Covid-19 and potentially risking her contracting it while in prison.
Covid-19 was the primary reason for the release of 14 other individuals released early by Governor Newsom serving life sentences. Therefore, Ms. Bonet wanted to exercise commutation for her sister due to her failing health and Covid-19.
Today, Chantel reached out to SB American to inform us Patricia was released today. See Chantel’s short email below informing us about Patricia’s release. SB American was one of many voices in this fight for Patricia’s freedom but the power of the press was a contributing factor to helping Chantel and Patricia.
