SAN BERNARDINO, California—The life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. will be celebrated at San Bernardino Valley College during its first-ever “MLK Dream Rally” on Tuesday, Jan. 14. “Dr. King was most well-known for his campaigns to end racial segregation on public transport, and for racial equality in the United States,” said Leslie M. Gregory, CalWORKS counselor and associate professor at SBVC, who is helping to organize the event. “San Bernardino Valley College prides itself in acknowledging and recognizing the many cultures and individuals that have made substantial contributions to our great country.”
The rally is open to all, and will begin at 10 a.m., next to the large megaphone by the Physical Sciences building. SBVC president Diana Z. Rodriguez and Keynasia Buffong, president of the SBVC Black Faculty Staff Association (BFSA), are scheduled to speak, and one SBVC student will be presented with a new BFSA scholarship launched in honor of Dr. King.
The event will be interactive, with students, faculty, administrators, and community members invited to approach the megaphone and shout out how King’s accomplishments “impacted them and generations to come,” Gregory said. A new banner dedicated to Dr. King and the March on Washington will also be unveiled, and light refreshments served.
The event is free and open to the public.
